A Personal Experience with Rocket Spanish:
Account of a middle age man who decided to learn Spanish using the Rocket Spanish program.
Growing up in the United States doesn't always create the need to learn a second language at a young age. Knowing only English and having a high school diploma seemed to suffice for the longest time, until after 30 years old and having become engaged to a woman from Venezuela and starting an import business of South American products.
Meeting the future in-laws proved to be a new experience in many ways and speaking with them using my narrow vocabulary wasn't going to be effective enough, being able to say only common greetings and phrase was not appropriate.
Learning Spanish quickly was now going to be a necessity for the new members of my family and also for business reasons. Of course, trying the usual books to learn on my own didn't seem to work and taking some courses wasn't helpful especially because of frequent traveling. Buying CD's to listen to and asking many people around me how to say certain words or phrases every time I didn't know something wasn't an easy way for me to learn Spanish. Rocket Spanish would have been the best way to start from the beginning; it could have saved me much trouble and embarrassment.
Commonly, you might see people learning a new language from some education system. Learning grammatical detail without even knowing the meaning of the words sometimes can be a difficult process and even become too frustrating.
Learning by speaking with others can also be a bad way to learn proper Spanish, because of the habits, or slang that you might learn incorrectly. You may also be learning inaccurately because of the inconsistency in which other people may know the language. If the people you learn Spanish phrases and words from do not speak very proper, your language might also suffer. Some people that you may be learning from might know Spanish, but not English very well; you may be losing accuracy in translation this way.
At first the I had to speak Spanish when I was dealing with taxi drivers, mechanics, street vendors or people who didn’t speak very proper Spanish. I was picking up their habits, accents and vocabulary and I didn’t know any better, I had no idea how my language skills could be suffering...
